Australian Retail Increasingly In Chains
Retail sales growth is still weak, and concentrated in the chains. The underperformance of the independents in categories such as clothing is concerning for its duration and its depth, and suggests structural change in the industry of a more permanent nature.

Consumers Sound The Retreat
Consumer spending fundamentals retreated in July and August from what proved to be a temporary uptick in June. The Westpac-Melbourne Institute Index of Consumer Sentiment fell by 8.3% in July and then by another 3.5% in August, bringing it down to its lowest level in more than two years.
