Economists and consumers don’t currently see eye to eye. The former insist that the economy is okay but the latter are acting for all the world like they disagree. The savings rate is up sharply, meaning that what might have been going into retailers’ tills is instead finding its way under the mattress. Can retailers figure out how to prize it out again?
