Providing for resilient jobs growth – ideas in planning for new economy jobs

Urbis’ Erin Saunders put forward a range of innovative ideas in planning for new economy jobs at the national PIA congress in Adelaide this week.

Following the theme of the conference ‘Building Resilient Communities’ Erin’s presentation outlined how the context and key drivers for employment lands planning has dramatically altered in recent years and planning systems needed to respond in ways other than ‘business as usual’ in order to provide for resilient jobs growth.

Using the South Sydney industrial area as a key case study the presentation illuminated key disconnects between the demand and supply of land for jobs in the area. A key recommendation made was that as employment lands compete poorly with other land uses (particularly residential) they needed to be protected and prioritised in planning systems.
